How Home Plumbing Systems Work
Your home's plumbing is actually two separate systems that work together: the water supply system that brings clean water in, and the drain-waste-vent (DWV) system that takes waste water out.
Understanding this basic division helps you troubleshoot problems. If you have no water pressure, the issue is in your supply system. If water won't drain, the problem is in your DWV system.
Water Supply vs. Drain Systems
Water Supply System
- Brings pressurized water into your home from the city main or well
- Water enters through the main shutoff valve
- Splits into hot and cold lines at the water heater
- Pipes are smaller (1/2" to 1") and under pressure
- Each fixture has shutoff valves for isolation
Drain-Waste-Vent System
- Removes waste water using gravity, not pressure
- Pipes are larger (1.5" to 4") and slope downward
- P-traps under fixtures hold water to block sewer gases
- Vent pipes let air in so drains flow properly
- All drains connect to main sewer line or septic
